Don't Do It Alone!
The residential construction, repair, remodeling, & maintenance industries are so intertwined. The amount of businesses referring customers to other local businesses is amazing and if you are not getting referrals on a daily or weekly basis from other local businesses you are truly missing the boat. Because of this I would integrate a door hanger marketing campaign with a local home service group.
Step 1: Identify Possible Members & Get Them To Join
Find the following businesses in your service area that are really good and reputable at what they do and have a decent history of positive experience servicing customers in the area. Here is an example list of some of the industries you should include.
1. Painter

3. Flooring Specialist
4. Lighting Specialist
5. Electrician
6. Countertop Company
7. Cabinet Company
8. Landscaper
9. Plumber
10. Handyman
11. Pest Control Company
12. Roofer
13. Home Security System Specialist
*Remember that in the beginning of something new and exciting it is often easy to motivate people. It is during this time that everyone joining the business group needs to commit and insure they are committed by putting some skin in the game. An easy way to commit and put skin in the game is to put some type of membership fee down. If they are unwilling to put any skin in the game, they will almost certainly abandon the group and leave it with less energy and motivation to move forward.
Step 2: Incorporate Facebook Groups
Create a group Facebook page that is for people in your main service city. This group Facebook page is to become a local community type page where people come to learn about the city, get news, ask for referrals, share local info, etc. The moderators will be the businesses in the group.
Don’t Forget
1. Don’t forget to use tracking numbers on the door hangers and on the material that is given to the homeowners. It is important to track results in order to get any type of measurement.
2. Don’t forget to promote the Facebook group. At first it will be slow but with such a powerful group of businesses it will be very effective.
3. Don’t be afraid to be picky on who you bring in your group. At the beginning it may be hard to get some people and you will need to convince them but in no time they will be wondering why they didn’t do this years before.
4. You may want to invest in having a really good marketing professional create your door hangers or the wording on the door hangers.
5. Remember that although this method of getting people to text you for a free consultation is via door hangers it doesn’t have to be. It could also be advertised to people in your area through Facebook ads, Google ads, mailers, emails, door to door knocking, etc.
6. Remember that a tree doesn’t become a tree right away and in any part of the growing process it can die if consistent nurturing and watering is cut off. The same is true with any good idea. Just because it isn’t bearing fruit the first day it is planted that doesn’t mean it won’t be a fruit bearing tree in the future that yields thousands of fruit.
Step 3: Prepare Leave Something Behind
As a group create a home makeover packet that highlights various aspects of a persons home and what it can be. The packet should have sections for each business in the group.
For example, a painting section that talks about and shows newly painted rooms, a color section, or a section that talks about painting a garage floor or refinishing a deck. Each section is like an idea book to get the home owner dreaming or wanting more for their home.
At the end of the packet or at the end of each section there should be some question and answer forms that can be written in by the professionals or home owner. (It makes it personable to them & will encourage them to hang on to it).
Step 4: Stay Organized
Now as a group create a schedule where at least 3 of the home professionals can go out friday night from 6:00 – 7:00 or 5:30 – 7:30 to do a free home makeover consultation. In the beginning it could just be on Friday nights but after it gets going well and gaining exposure it could be done every night and the 3 pros would rotate each day.
Step 5: Promote The Offer
Create a door hanger that highlights the value of a free home makeover consultation by 3 pros. Then add a cherry on top by offering them a free $20 gift card to a local restaurant. (Contact the local restaurant before to see if it could be more of a win win situation where they give you a discount on the gift card.)
The door hanger could even say something like “Free Date Night” or “Dinner & a Movie on Us”! After a long day at work many people would jump at the opportunity. In order to qualify the person has to send a text to schedule. The first two people to schedule get the offer.
Target a specific area with x amount of door hangers and see who bites. Remember that on the door hangers the action you want them to take is to text you to schedule a free consultation on a specific day.
Step 6: Keep Scheduling
Once you get your first text schedule an appointment with them. Since it is a 30 minute consultation you will probably only have time for 2 a night but if more people text in simply schedule them for another day.
Step 7: The Magic Happens
Once inside their home the magic will truly happen. Remember to always have some type of design person there. You don’t want a plumber, a roofer, and a handyman to be the three. People don’t really get excited about those three professionals or services they offer. However, that doesn’t mean they are not highly valuable.
Almost every home needs something and when the three are in the home with a professional packet and a free gift card you are bound to either spark interest, get to give a bid, get the job, get referred to their friends, and build a solid relationship that won’t be forgotten. Oh and they will definitely talk about it.
When in their home don’t forget to have them join your local Facebook group. This Facebook group will grow to be a major player in your local community. In the beginning the group members will have to post local content, news, info, etc but as more locals join and learn about it the content will come by the buckets full and your group of professionals will be well positioned to generate a lot of business from referrals from the group.

Let's Count The Benefits
1. You are networking with a bunch of local businesses that are in your area but are not direct competitors. These relationships will grow and bring you a bunch of referrals.
2. You will not be forgotten by the people who invite you in their home. Nobody is doing something like this and it will always stand out in their mind.
3. Whomever the homeowner decides to use will be able to refer the other members of the group with that much more trust.
4. As a group you will build a Facebook page that will bring more work than most of the members will know what to do with.
